Static The Mic Addict

Tell us your name and about yourself in 25 1/2 words or less.
I'm Static The Mic Addict. Originally from London, Ontario. I now reside in Canmore, Alberta in the Rocky Mountains. Still got love for home.

When did you get into hip hop?
I listened to alot of wu-tang and krs-one back in public school. After a while hiphop kinda died for me and I started listening to alternative rock. In grade ten I was introduced to some underground hiphop shit and I was hooked!

Who are your influences?
I hate this question. There are so many. I believe every artist is somehow influenced by every other artist they have heard. Then they begin to adapt parts of each into one unique and original style. Just like every person is a little bit of every other person they have met. I'll give you my top five.
Josh Martinez, Atmosphere, Eyedea, Classified, Our Lady Peace... yes, our lady peace.

What are your thoughts on the London hip hop scene? Ever lived anywhere else? What was it like there?
London has a big scene with a lot of talent. Only problem is talent brings egos. There are many in the city who don't get the props they deserve because there is too much competition in the scene. Every hiphop head claims to be an emcee as well and this creates a lot of hate due to jealousy. I now live in a place with NO hiphop scene at all and to be honest I enjoy it more. I haven't had much time to check out the Calgary hiphop scene nearby but I've heard some good stuff come out of cow town.

Any story behind you name?

Back in the days of Realistic mics and tape deck recordings there was a small group of us who would do very little outside of freestyling and doing drugs. I became addicted to the microphone and alot of the recordings were overlayed with alot of static due to ghetto equiptment. This spawned the name static the mic addict.

Where can people hear you? CD? Demo? Vinyl? Website?
If you live in Canmore or Banff you can see me perform at the Canmore Hotel every sunday night. I do a few songs during open mic and spend the rest of the night trading demo cd's for beers.
I get pretty loaded for free and it's always a good time.

I haven't been on either page in a while, but updates are coming soon.

Is there an album in the works?
Yup. Has been for 7 years now. I have more than enough tracks to make a few albums but I'm a bit picky and a bit of a perfectionist. My Independent artist side makes me stubborn and I've decided I'm going to record, mix, and master my entire album myself. Once I have some new gear (new mic and compressor) I'll be rollin'!

Who's your favorite artist outside of hip hop?
I like alot of stuff outside of hip hop. Alot of alternative rock, Matthew Good Band, Our Lady Peace, that kinda stuff.

Who's your favorite london act, besides yourself?
Hmmm, well, there's the ever popular Shad. This man has been doing his thing since God knows when and has a very polished flow. Also the guitar playing while rapping is quite impressive.
Ngajuana is probably my favourite, and Not because he's my boy. I've watched him progress in music since the first full song he wrote and I think he has more to say than anyone I've heard. From deep, conscious story telling and plot twists that leave you speechless, eg. "Bottoms Up", To comical diss style tracks like Domino Effect's "F*ck Yo B*tch", this dude's got it covered. No matter what your beat sounds like he's guaranteed to rip it and leave you amazed by the end result.
